About THE DOCUMENTARY

THE ACCIDENT

At approximately 11:40 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, 2006, a Cessna 206 piloted by 24-year-old Georgina Joshi crashed while on final approach to Bloomington/Monroe County Airport in Indiana. The accident killed all five people onboard.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the government agency tasked with investigating all aviation accidents, investigated the accident and found that Georgina was the sole probable cause of the accident, blaming “pilot error.”

Georgina was an accomplished pilot and the family found that NTSB’s report left many questions unanswered.

Unsatisfied with the NTSB’s findings, Georgina’s mother Louise Addicott and her father Yatish Joshi, retained independent experts to review the available information and further investigate the accident. The investigation led to a ten-year fight to uncover the truth and hold the NTSB accountable for its decisions.

THE RISING STAR

Born in Elkhart, Indiana, Georgina Joshi loved music from an early age. She began violin lessons at age 2 and would sing in musicals throughout her childhood. She would become the first ever high school student accepted to the South Bend Chamber Singers and went on to study voice at the Royal College of Music in London, England, followed by graduate studies at Indiana University in Bloomington.

She had all the markers for success in the opera world: a stunning voice, fantastic technique, and a commanding stage presence. Sadly, her career would be cut short by tragedy.

THE FACTS

  • Over 1,000 airplanes crash in the United States every year.

  • 1/5 of those accidents result in fatalities

  • Someone dies in an airplane accident nearly every day.

THE NEED FOR CHANGE

The National Transportation Safety Board is an independent government agency created by Congress to investigate accidents in all modes of transportation and make safety recommendations to prevent those accidents from happening again.

The NTSB focuses heavily on commercial aviation accidents and as a result, incidents in the U.S. are virtually zero.

Unfortunately, the NTSB neglects a large portion of the aviation community. General aviation, which includes medical helicopters, agricultural planes, and private aircraft, represents thousands of flights per day.

Despite the NTSB’s excellent reputation as the gold standard in transportation investigations, more than one thousand aviation incidents occur every year, and has remained the same for a decade.

By chronicling the legal journey and emotional hardship of the Joshi family, INVISIBLE SKY exposes the NTSB and its failure to thoroughly investigate the thousands of private plane crashes that happen in the United States every year.
